Bronkham Hill
Bronkham Hill submitted by TheCaptain : A small surface hole has opened up to a huge sink hole on Bronkham Hill, West Dorset. "The sink hole now appears stable and the National Trail is open. Sink holes occur naturally, but our advice is always take care and if you have concerns report them to Dorset Council." A multitude of round barrows on Bronkham Hill in Dorset, part of the Dorset Ridgeway. The barrows are scattered along the length of the ridge, with an incredible density.

It must have been quite a sight when they were gleaming white chalk mounds. They're still quite impressive in this state of decay, covered in grass and blending in with their surroundings.

Bronkham Hill
Bronkham Hill submitted by TimPrevett : Among the barrows and adjacent the track is this very old (clues as to the dating of it would be helpful) limestone boundary wall. 24/12/20, photo on iPhone 11. (1 comment - Vote or comment on this photo)

Bronkham Hill
Bronkham Hill submitted by TimPrevett : The largest barrow on Bronkham hill; worth spending time appreciating its size, surrounding ditch, and the barbarity of the opening across its summit. 24/12/20, photo on iPhone 11. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Bronkham Hill
Bronkham Hill submitted by JimChampion : The crevice mutilation in the huge round barrow on Bronkham Hill at grid reference SY62688687. Yes that's my shadow, couldn't really be avoided - work out the compass direction I was facing given that I took the photo at 2.35pm on the day after the winter solstice sunset. Bronkham Hill submitted by JimChampion : Looking southeast from the top of the large barrow on Bronkham Hill at grid reference SY62688687. In the foreground is the berm and ditch of the large barrow. Beyond that a variety of round barrows - including what looks like a bell barrow, just beyond the small ditch and remains of a wall that cut across this field.

Bronkham Hill
Bronkham Hill submitted by JimChampion : Distant view of the large round barrow at grid reference SY62988720 next to the farm buildings on Shorn Hill, just to the north of Bronkham Hill. The map also shows tumuli in the field between the barrow and photographer location.

Bronkham Hill
Bronkham Hill submitted by JimChampion : A very small round barrow at grid reference SY62658687, a slight bump in the field shown up more clearly by the low winter sunlight. It is dwarfed by its neighbour, a huge bowl barrow with a cleft through its mound.

Bronkham Hill
Bronkham Hill submitted by JimChampion : Looking southeast towards the highest part of Bronkham Hill, along the broad ridge from grid reference SY625869. The low winter sunlight coming from the southwest allows the very small round barrows to be seen, as well as the more obvious large ones.

Bronkham Hill
Bronkham Hill submitted by JimChampion : A closely-set pair of barrows at grid reference SY625870, looking northwest. The depression in the foreground is a naturally occurring feature called a 'shake hole'.

Bronkham Hill
Bronkham Hill submitted by JimChampion : The large barrow at grid reference SY62358717, viewed so that half of it is in shadow. The low winter sun casts very long shadows for much of the afternoon, good conditions for photographing these earthworks. The tower on the hill to the left is the Admiral Hardy Monument (he of the 'Hardy, kiss me' Admiral Nelson's deathbed scenario).

Bronkham Hill
Bronkham Hill submitted by JimChampion : Looking northwest at the prominent barrow at grid reference SY62358717. This field on top of Bronkham Hill is well-grazed by sheep - some are standing on the side of the barrow posing for the photo. The pit in the foreground is a 'shake hole' - a chemical weathering and erosion phenomenon that I've not seen before in chalkland.

Bronkham Hill submitted by JimChampion : A view northwest from the prominent barrow at grid reference SY62358717. In the foreground is a slightly mutilated barrow, at grid reference SY62318723. On the horizon in the far distance (centre of photo) are the barrows at Smitten Corner. The tower to the left is the Admiral Hardy Monument, also the site of a barrow cemetery. Bronkham Hill submitted by JimChampion : Looking ESE at the prominent barrow at grid reference SY62358717. This field on top of Bronkham Hill is well-grazed by sheep - some of which can be seen to the right of the barrow next to their feeder. In the foreground there are many sheep footprints in the soil.

Bronkham Hill submitted by TimPrevett : Some barrows slightly to the north of Bronkham Hill. Gorse, bluebells and rapeseed make for gorgeous strong colours, with the relaxing verdant grass.

Bronkham Hill
Bronkham Hill submitted by TimPrevett : A barrow to the far east of Bronkham Hill - an area of an unbelievably dense amount of barrows. If you haven't looked at the map of the area, take a look.

Bronkham Hill
Bronkham Hill submitted by TimPrevett : A huge amount of barrows, in many varieties and stages of depletion, run along the ridge of Bronkham Hill. This barrow is to the east of the main group, and is intersected by a field boundary.

Bronkham Hill
Bronkham Hill submitted by TimPrevett : A huge amount of barrows, in many varieties and stages of depletion, run along the ridge of Bronkham Hill. This looks west along the ridge - many low barrows are in the picture if you look carefully. In the distant left is Hardy Monument, and in the foreground is part of a massive area showing where the barrow must have been dug into sometime.

Bronkham Hill submitted by TimPrevett : A huge amount of barrows, in many varieties and stages of depletion, run along the ridge of Bronkham Hill. This is looking north from the largest barrow. Its mound is in the foreground, with a large hollowed area of robbing, and then a rim. Notice the bluebells and rapeseed in the distance.

Jim, was this on Thursday just gone? About the only decent bright spell in that area of Dorset all week!

Friday afternoon we were briefly at Old Sarum in driving rain and winds, and an aborted trip to Wayland's Smithy & Uffington... glad you had something nice!
