Long Barrow in Dorset

This long barrow is oriented NW-SE, 50m long and up to 25m wide. Its official scheduling says that it is 0.6m in height, but this fact, along with its infilled ditches, make it another 'move along, nothing to see here' type of long barrow. Any close-up photograph of the barrow looks much the same as a photo of any old field. It is possible to make out a low bump from a distance.

The long barrow is associated with a number of Bronze Age round barrows on this hill overlooking the Frome valley, which form a loose barrow cemetery. These too are very slight, although scheduled as being of national importance. Excavation of the long barrow in 1881 revealed human remains and some flint implements.

Access The barrows lie on private land, and what can be seen of them is visible from the field gate where the lane crests the hill. Poundbury hillfort is only a mile away along the same lane and is much more interesting to visit.

I am looking for information regarding the home "Quatre Bras" in Muckleford that at one time belonged to my relative Lt. Col. John Garland. Since I have been doing a good deal of research about my family this has become an important part of the story and he is the mystery man. I would like to be able to contact whoever lives there to seek further information that they may have about previous owners. One of my relatives (who contacted me on the the internet by a strange fluke) some years ago had visited Quatre Bras and mentioned that the owners were very helpful and informative about the home. I would just like to know more and possibly find a photo. Would certainly appreciate any help or suggestions that anyone would like to offer. Thank you in advance. Sandy Garland King in Florida, USA
