The Silent Pool
The Silent Pool submitted by Andy B : The Silent Pool, Albury. The pool is formed from a nearby natural spring, and its true name is Sherbourne Pond. Its clear waters and peaceful setting give it an air of tranquility, or 'silence'. More about the legends of the pool here. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Sacred Spring in Surrey. The pool is formed from a nearby natural spring. There are in fact two adjacent pools/ponds at the site near Albury. The older (and slightly higher up the hillside) is the Silent Pool.

The other (show in the picture) is Sherbourne Pond which was created in the 1600s when a new dam was built to create a larger source of water for the village of Albury. The clear waters and peaceful setting there give it an air of tranquility, or 'silence'.

More about the legends of the pool here.

I'd watched the BBC TV repeat of a 2019 programme 'Escape to the Perfect Town' this afternoon (21.08.23), at 3pm, and right at the end of the programme, I thought that the large pond looked familiar.
The feature was about the gin distillery set up near the natural resource of fresh water, ie: Albury Silent Pool, where the owner(?) said the spring came up through certain minerals. He said it had been important since the Iron Age, which convinced me it must be the one I remembered on Meg P, for its tranquil surroundings.
For anyone interested, it might be available on i-player.
More photos and legend info on the gin firm's site (see link on separate comment.)

its a shame to see how neglected the pool has become,i used to visit it as a child,it was beautiful grassy banks flowers picnic tables {wood } and speckled trout swimming around . as far as i knew it was being managed by the national trust ? the water is still crystal clear but the pool needs dredging to remove silting.

Beautiful scenary,

There is a channel between the two ponds, there is a magnificant tree here a very peacefull place.

I did dowse an energy line passing through towards the back of the silent pool, this most probably connects to St marthas Hill and maybe St Catherines Hill In Artington, Guildford.

I did hear that a famous king drowned a little girl in the pond, which is why it is called Silent pool, however if this is the case it does not reflect the beauty and tranquility of the pond.

Hello,
Dead links are the bane of my life (well perhaps one of them...)
If you are someone out there reading this running an informative web site, please think twice before just pulling the plug on it...!

Luckily this page has been archived at the web archive, where hopefully it will be preserved for good.

Here is the new (old) link on the story of Albury and the Silent Pool.

Hi Andy

There is a link on this web page which says:

"More about the legends of the pool here."

The link appears to be broken. Any chance of fixing it as I would love to read more about the legends.

Kind regards,

Stuart

Re: The Silent Pool by Anonymous on Friday, 10 April 2009
i lived in a cottage in the farmyard right by the pool... myself, my partner, my sister, and at least 4 friends experienced a noisy ghost in the cottage all separately and one time me and partner together experienced the noise and the actions of this ghost. that wandered around the upstairs landing and first bedroom pulling on stable latch doors and sitting on the bed etc. my sister was the last person to experience this and spoke to the ghost explaining it should move on as it was dead.. it was not seen again after that up to when i moved from the area... ironically i read the story of the pool when i was 10 and lived now where near the place later moving to guildford when iwas 18 i met a girl and became friends with her she went on to rent sherbourne cottage from farmer barr with her 3 friends as they moved out partly to do with the noises she was eventually alone and asked me to stay over as she was lonely sometimes eventuall i moved in with my fiance. i had never been told about any noises or mystical happenings. after a short while my friend went away for a couplee of weeks in that time me and my fiance experienced the ghost seperately and together. when i started to explain it to my friend on her return. she stopped me and told me what i had experienced explaining that was why she used to get me to stay as she was terrified of being there alone. my sister visited us and experienced it several times and decided to communicate and it seemed to do so. this was mostly between 1982-7 and we left the area in about 1989. i never noticed anything odd at the pool and have only ever found it peaceful and energising but the cottage was a different matter and we though maybe it was the ghost of the farmer still grieving the loss of its daughter but who knows... i know this account is true as god is my witness.

I was there today. Silent Pool has been dry for over a year. Sherbourne Pond has still got some water in it but will dry up unless we get some serious rain soon.
