Helmichsteine submitted by runastera : Hunedbed Germany #908 - Helmichsteine - located in my hometown Wallenhorst (State of Lower Saxony) near Osnabrueck. This megalithic grave is called Gevasteine, too. Geva was the wife of Duke Widukind, a famous saxon leader who fighted bloody battles against Emperor Carl the Great (Francs) around 780 A.D. (compare with hunebed Germany #909 Karlsteine) Geva was a sister of King Harold I. of Haithabu... (Vote or comment on this photo)

For the whole information given on this boards, one single panel would have been absolutely sufficient.(April 2008)

Site description:
Remains of a larger chamber facing appr. West-East probably with lateral entrance to the South. The stones are deeply embedded into remains of the barrow. Chamber's clear size was approx. 14 x 1,8m.
Like most other megalithic tombs in Germany it was used as a quarry in historic times. As a result in this case, the eastern part and the passage are completely destroyed the remaining parts are damaged.

Remarks:
When I visited this site in 1989 it was rather overgrown, but beautifully situated in a field. Twenty years later now it is rather spoilt. Although some gardening would have been sufficient, someone allowed the local gun club to “beautify” the site:
1. Four large metal objects were implanted into the barrow to “symbolize missing orthostats”
2. Furthermore they had the brilliant idea to built three (!) information boards. One looks like a bus stop shelter. The two others are less oversized but placed very obtrusively into barrow's edge. They even have the same (!) information content. For the whole information given on this boards, one single panel would have been absolutely sufficient.
3. Maybe to make sure, that the site will again get overgrown soon a hedge was planted along barrow's edge. According to the info board they intended to symbolize the missing kerbstones by this hedge....
Apart from that, a sports ground was established right beside the tomb.
