Rock Outcrop in North Rhine-Westphalia.
Fantastic naturally occurring outcrops of rock - soaring towers of stone pillars - which have long been used, since prehistoric times, as a proto-temple.

Vulva-like Rock Sculpture at Externsteine/Germany and Fullmoon as Indication for Sexual Rituals Poster by Sepp Rothwangl for SEAC 2018 (Graz)

The Externsteine in Kreis Lippe/Germany is a monument with significant astronomical function originating from pre-Christian or prehistorian time. One of Its most important astronomical components is the so called Sonnenloch (sun hole) orientated towards the rising sun at summer solstice as well as the lunar extreme, and thus being a trigger for midsummer full moon. This circular window is located in the Höhenkammer (high chamber), an apse with an altar at top of the Turmfels (Rock II). At the base of Turmfels on the Northeast side is a podium, called Kanzel.

Seven steps of a staircase lead up to a platform. At the front of the podium is a vulva-like rock structure (rock art?). Although this structure is readily identifiable and at a prominent place it is till now unpublished because of unknown reason. We will discuss this rock sculpture from an anthroposophical, astronomical, and calendrical point of view: This sculpture designates a special place for gathering at special times, which the monument indicates, and echoes the sex-strike model.

It predicts that full moon was the signal for the relaxation of taboos, and return to a profane life. At the end of a successful monthly collective hunt and surrender of meat around the time of full moon, women would no longer need to seclude themselves. In sum, sex-strike theory predicts that the period of waxing moon was constructed as a sacred period of strict seclusion and taboos against ‘marital’ sex, while waning moon was a profane period of temporary ‘marriage’ and cooked meat.
