Stockbridge Down Bowl Barrows submitted by JimChampion

Round Barrow(s) in Hampshire. Stockbridge Down, to the east of the town of Stockbridge, is an area of chalk downland managed by the National Trust. As it says on the information board at the site's car park you find "history all around you". There are many Bronze Age bowl barrows on the 160 acre site, with the largest being several metres across but only one or two feet high. Fourteen of these barrows are protected as Scheduled Ancient Monuments, and some have been fenced in. The Hampshire Treasures online resource says that excavation of these barrows in 1939 revealed an inhumation and a copper awl, and a cremation with an urn, awl and beads.

Access Car park is at grid-ref SU388345, at the south-east corner of the National Trust land. Turn left into the car park off the B3049 about 2 miles east of Stockbridge. Paths criss-cross the downland from this point and the larger tumuli are obvious from their protective fences. Also at this site are an Iron Age field-boundary earthwork and the ramparts of Woolbury Iron Age hillfort.

Looking south on Stockbridge Down. One of the less well preserved round barrows is in the foreground, covered with scrub, and the hurdles surrounding a better preserved specimen can be seen just behind and to the right. This part of the down is carpeted with reddish-brown flowers.

January 2005. One of the larger bowl barrows on Stockbridge Down, probably the easiest to find as it is completely encircled by a wooden fence on its own in the middle of the open downland.
