St. Peter's Well (Lodsworth) submitted by DavidCWoods

Holy Well or Sacred Spring in West Sussex. I found this from a search engine while looking for somewhere entirely different! Situated beside an old track running right beside the church from the South to the North Downs, 200 yards downhill (north) from the church, the location wasn't obvious - it's concealed from the road by a hedge. Fortunately a lady dog walker gave us directions.<

The well has been renovated and until recently was looked after by an elderly resident, but is still maintained. It had a reputation for curing ailments of the eye, and attracted pilgrims. The church guide says that it probably pre-dates the church (which goes back at least to the 13thC) and the Parish Plan suggests that Celts lived here before the Saxons who gave the village its name.

Close to the well is a small, worked stone which may have some carving - can't be sure.

Situated in a little corner by the side of a trackway just after it leaves the road down from the chuch, the site is easy to miss as it's sheltered from the road by a hedge. Confusingly, there's a sign further up the road on the other side "St. Peter's Well" but this relates to a house of the same name.
