Jõelähtme submitted by thecaptain

Near the village of Jõelähtme, a few miles to the East of Tallinn, Estonia, is a group of excavated burial mounds. While building the new road, this graveyard was found and excavated, and it is now open to the public with its own little museum.

The mounds belong to the 9th-7th centuries BC. This was the late Bronze Age in Estonia as well as in Scandinavia. The dead were buried unburned and provided with modest grave goods: some bone and bronze artefacts. One man was accompanied by his dog. According to calculations the "graveyard" was used by a single family throughout several generations. Each generation created a new mound. The head of the family was buried in the central cist and the less important family members around him inside the stone circle. The slaves were probably buried elsewhere.
