attlebax visited on 26th Dec 2012 - their rating: Cond: 3 Access: 4 The tombs start about 20 metres from the road. Look for a couple of large piles of stones which mark where they are. Like many sites in Malta they are not signposted and you virtually have to be on top of them before you see them. There are houses on the other side of the road. Start half-way down the road and just walk into the rough land opposite the houses.

Xemxija Tombs
Xemxija Tombs submitted by enkidu41 : Tomb 1 showing the circular accuracy of both the opening and the entrance to its 3-lobed chamber. The similar tomb 2 is just to the right. The tombs now connect underground due to the separating wall having collapsed. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Rock-cut tombs in Malta. On the eastward slope of a hill overlooking St. Paul’s Bay are to be found 6 rock-cut tombs all within 45 metres of each other.

Tombs 1 and 2 were cut separately each with 3 rough lobes but they were so close together that the wall separating them has broken through linking the tombs underground. Tombs 3 and 4 are separate with simple kidney-shaped chambers. Tomb 5 is the largest this being achieved by chipping out 5 lobes, a technique which avoids leaving too large an unsupported span. This is highly suggestive of temple plans and it is thought there may be a formative connection. Tomb 6 is double chambered with one chamber having a collapsed roof.

Xemxija Tombs submitted by enkidu41 : Tomb 6, a double chambered tomb. The entrance is through the higher of the two openings in the picture. What appears to be a second opening in the lower part of the picture is due to the collapse of the roof to the second chamber. (1 comment - Vote or comment on this photo)

If they were bronze age tombs where were all the bodies or burial stuff that goes with them? Why make them so small when more than 1 person is going to die?

The suggested shape may be part of the answer, if it is related to the maltas megalithics that we call temples. Perhaps it was to do with natural energy? Perhaps electromagnetic energy for healing of humans and for use on seeds and young animals to change their physical properties?

If you have seen the experiments carried out on wheat grains in a high electromagnetic field you will see what can and may have happened (Seed of Knowledge: Stone of Plenty by John Burke and Kaj Halberg).

Which may explain those stone altars or large shelves in Malta's temples and Skara Brae.

For those interested there are a lot more images and photographs of the Xemxija tombs and surrounding stuff like the Xemxija cart ruts, apiaries, roman baths and roman road.
