Longstone (Challacombe) submitted by baz : The 3 metres high Longstone at Challacombe on Exmoor. (SS705430) (Vote or comment on this photo)
Three kilometres from the nearest road and standing almost 3 metres high, the Longstone at Challacombe is the tallest stone on Exmoor.

It's formed from a slab of local slate, being 1.25m wide and only 0.25m thick at its base.

Longstone (Challacombe)
Longstone (Challacombe) submitted by thecaptain : The splendidly slender Challacombe longstone. In many ways, I am amazed that this stone is still here at all. Not only for there to be such a large stone up on Exmoor, where all the other stones are so small, but also because of its delicate looking state, being so thin, and not a strong type of stone. The "trigger stone" can be seen at its foot.

Longstone (Challacombe)
Longstone (Challacombe) submitted by thecaptain : On this day in early March, it was very boggy getting to the stone, and in fact is standing in the middle of its very own marsh !

Longstone (Challacombe)
Longstone (Challacombe) submitted by thecaptain : The Challacombe Longstone is almost 3 metres tall, but very slender at only about 15 to 20 cm in thickness. In many ways, I am amazed that it is still here with us. Not only for there to be such a large stone up on Exmoor not taken and used for other purposes, but also because of its delicate looking state, being so thin, and not a strong type of stone.

Longstone (Challacombe)
Longstone (Challacombe) submitted by thecaptain : The Challacombe Longstone has a similar lightning strike profile to The Langstone on Dartmoor. Seen here looking northwest, with some of the Chapman Barrows on the horizon.

Longstone (Challacombe) submitted by thecaptain : The lovely Challacombe Longstone. Seen here looking southeast, with Longstone Barrow and a couple of others on the horizon.

Longstone (Challacombe) submitted by thecaptain : The view from the top of Longstone Barrow, showing the situation of the Longstone, which can be seen as a small dark mark just below the skyline about two thirds to the right of the picture, easy to find (as in reality) by following the path from the barrow.

Longstone (Challacombe) submitted by HOLYWELL : In the middle of nowhere but as very atmospheric site. Longstone barrow can be seen in the distance. (2 comments)

Longstone Landscape Community Archaeology Project 2014-2015 by Andy B on Monday, 29 January 2018

Longstone Landscape Community Archaeology Project

The Parracombe History and Archaeology Society (PHAS), some residents of Challacombe, North Devon Archaeological Society, the Exmoor Moorland Initiative and the Exmoor National Park have teamed up to undertake this ambitious new project.

With more than forty signed up volunteers there is great potential to research, record and more fully understand the moorland archaeology straddling the Parish boundary between the two villages.

Phase 1 of this project is now officially complete and a report is available at this link
http://www.ndas.org.uk/Longstone%20Landscapes%20Project%20report.pdf

However Parracombe Archaeology and History group together with NDAS are keen to continue work on this important prehistoric and medieval landscape. There will be a geophysics survey of Radworthy in the spring and more barrow surveying when the moor has dried out somewhat. Information about the work can also be found in the NDAS Newsletters
http://www.ndas.org.uk/newsletters.html

More information can be found in our Autumn 2014 Newsletter and at this link http://parracombe.org.uk/longstone-landscape-project-2014-2015/

What a lovely stone this is, especially for Exmoor. It is almost 3 metres tall, but very slender at only about 15 to 20 cm in thickness. In profile, it has a similar lightning strike shape to The Langstone on Dartmoor. On this day in early March, it was very boggy getting to the stone, and in fact is standing in the middle of its very own marsh !

It is situated not on the top of the hill or ridge, but significantly downslope, in the saddle between Chapman Barrows and Woodbarrow hilltops. It overlooks a very steep valley down off the edge of the high moor, which drops down towards Challacombe, at the top of where all the water runs down.

In many ways, I am amazed that this stone is here at all. Not only for there to be such a large stone up on Exmoor, where all the other stones are so small, but also because of its delicate looking state, being so thin, and not a strong type of stone. So many other Exmoor stones are all broken.

From HOLYWELL

"What a walk and very boggy at times so be careful. The only menhir on Exmoor and over the border in Devon. It is 9ft high and very thin. It is probably associated with a nearby barrow. The walk is worth it because this is a very peaceful location for this ancient site."
