Creggandevesky
Creggandevesky submitted by LizH : A splendid court tomb (on a very dull day). It is both very long and the court is very wide. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Court Tomb in Co. Tyrone.
Overlooking Lough Mallon, this is a striking example of an Irish Court Tomb.

Access is good, but the site is not well signposted.

This court tomb is one of the most splendid in Ireland, perhaps rivalled only by the tomb at Creevykeel in Sligo. It was discovered only at the end of the 1970s when the site was designated for land reclamation. Some large stones at the entrance had been visible above ground but most of it had not. It was subsequently excavated, and now shows as a well preserved monument with a very large courtyard. It is about 18 m long, and the court is a 5 m U shape.
Apparently remains from 21 individuals were found in the tomb, which is an unusually large number for a court tomb. There is a much better description in detail (and I could only ape it) here

It's a pleasant walk round the side of a lough, there is a signpost on the road side, but you do have to be looking out for it. (It's less good if it's pouring with rain.) The tomb is very impressive, in a reasonable state of preservation, and the entrance portal is particularly fine. The size of the court at the front is also large and it's well preseved, making it a magnificent site.
