Winter Hill Stone
Winter Hill Stone submitted by DavidRaven : The Winter Hill Stone. The Winter solstice sunrise is said to be visible rising from the nearby Hitching Stone, from this point. There are several cup-marks, just visible on the base of the stone. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Rock Art in West Yorkshire
So called maybe because the sunrise at the winter solstice rises from the nearby Hitching Stone?

Update January 2018: The Northern Antiquarian (TNA) also features a page for this cup marked stone - see their entry for Winter Hill Stone, Cowling, North Yorkshire, which gives directions for finding this stone, together with photographs (including close ups of the cup marks), and a description. TNA adds: "on its lower south-facing edge there are around 20 well-defined cups that clearly stand out. No other cup-marked stones appear to be nearby (surely there’s a few more kicking about…?)"

Update January 2019: This rock art panel is now recorded in Boughey & Vickerman's "Prehistoric Rock Art of the West Riding Supplement (2018)", pages 233 to 234. It is described as "a large, conspicuous, isolate rock about 2m high and more than 3m west to east, sitting on the crest of Winter Hill above Cowling in rough pasture …. the top of the rock is very weathered with the typical deep natural grooves caused by rainwater run-off …. on the south east margin of the rock is a protruding basal ledge and this carries a total of 23 cups, 15 definite, 5 reasonably certain, and a further possible 3. The cups are more certain, larger, deeper and clearer towards the eastern end of the ledge". The Supplement includes a photograph of the rock in its landscape context and a close up of the cup marks on the basal ledge.

The Journal of Antiquities also includes an entry for the Winter Hill Stone, Keighley Moor, West Yorkshire, which includes photographs, directions for finding this rock art panel and a list of reference sources for more information.

Winter Hill Stone
Winter Hill Stone submitted by Brigantia : The winter solstice sunrise (morn of the 21st Dec). Standing on the cup-marked Winter Hill Stone and looking up to the Hitching Stone, the sun rose a few degreees of arc south of the projected winter solstice alignment, which I thought may have accounted for the name of Winter Hill Stone. Maybe 5000 years ago it could have been closer? It was knocking on -15 degrees C when we were there - ... (Vote or comment on this photo)

Winter Hill Stone
Winter Hill Stone submitted by Sunny100 : Deeper, eroded cup-markings, ridges and gulleys on the top of Winter Hill Stone upon Keighley Moor, West Yorkshire. These are, perhaps, rarely seen cup-marks as most people look at the base. Photo taken on 10.09.14. (Vote or comment on this photo)
