Madrid_Miner visited on 31st May 2010 - their rating: Cond: 3 Amb: 3 Access: 2 Walking up the hill to this site was a bit tricky. There were fences to climb, brushy corridors to circumvent, hidden rocks and holes along the way, and cattle in the fields. I chose to walk in from the trail down from the ring fort to the south, but then walked out towards the school house at the west end of the marshy field. Neither path was easy walking. There were no roadside indicators or gates that made the trek to these sites straight forward.

Three slender pillars in Co. Cork known as The Three Fingers rise dramatically against the sky. Up to 4.2m tall, evenly spaced and set into joints in the exposed rock surface. A fourth stone lies prostrate nearby, out of line. A fifth stone was removed in the 19th century and now stands in the Somerville Estate at Castletownshend.

17.7km (11 ml) NW are the petroglyphs at Ballybane

Access: (1/2 in. sheet 24). l.2km (3/4ml) NW of Castletownshend, visible on a ridge to the N of the L 60 road to Skibbereen, on the opposite side of the road to Knockdrum fort.

Class Stone row
Townland GURRANES
SMR No. CO142-073----
Description Row of three tall thin slabs, a low stone and large prostrate slab, prominently situated on low ridge. The stones not set in line, but have general ENE-WSW alignment. Low stone stands at the NE; it is 1.3m L, 0.2m T and 1m H and is loosely set in ground. Prostrate slab to N of this measures 4m x 1.3m and probably formed part of row. First of the three tall slabs leans heavily to E; it is 0.5m L, 0.3m T and 4.3m H. Next stone, 2.8m to the SW, is 0.5m L, 0.2. T and 2.5m H; loose stone lies beside it. (O Nualláin 1988, 237, no. 55; Roberts 1988, Ch. 2, no. 28) The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
