Misc. Earthwork in Hertfordshire
This Late Iron Age boundary ditch is real hidden gem, and easily accessible by walking a short distance along the footpath off White Horse Lane, coming out of the village of Burnham Green.
I parked on the steep bank just opposite the path on the lane. I'm not sure if that's an official parking space but it fitted my Fiesta nicely. It didn't seem to be a passing point, as it was too steep, and there's an official passing place just beyond it.
I wasn't expecting much from this site, but was pleasantly surprised to enter the copse at the southern edge of the remains of the ditch and see a really quite large and impressive bank and ditch stretching into the distance.
Pastscape (Monument No. 364776) describes it as a Belgic boundary ditch:
"A strongly constructed bank and ditch oriented
north west - south east across a high ridge spur and ideally
positioned for either defence or concealment; the ditch attains
a maximum depth of 2.4m with the, now spread, western bank a maximum
height of 1.1m [...] The strength and engineering likens the feature to other proved
Belgic works in this area and it is almost certainly of the
same period, now situated in an established copse. The siting of the bank on the W or lower side seems curious. The earthwork originally extended further N (and probably S as well), its current survival being conditioned by the extent of managed woodland."
There is a central break in the ditch which, according to Pastscape,
may or may not be original.
