St Anne's Well (Whitstone)
St Anne's Well (Whitstone) submitted by Thorgrim : The church is set high on a hillside way above the village of Whitstone in north Cornwall. It would seem that the church was deliberately built there to Christianise the pagan well. Look inside at the strange head staring out of the greenery. (2 comments - Vote or comment on this photo)

St Anne's Well (Whitstone) submitted by cazzyjane : The interior of St Anne's well. Unfortunately in this photo you cant quite make out the wonderful little slate head above the niche in the well. The waters are still used for baptisms today. (Vote or comment on this photo)

St Anne's Well (Whitstone) submitted by Thorgrim : Can this strange carving be that of St Anne? Surely not - is it then the face of the ancient goddess Anu? Has her name been Christianised into Anne? (3 comments - Vote or comment on this photo)

Hi, Anonymous. Sorry you were disappointed today. Like you, we've visited many churches, only to arrive to find they have been locked (usually to prevent vandalism and theft), so I've taken to contacting the church wardens to prearrange visits.

Contact details can usually be found on A Church Near You website, or alternatively see if the church (or village) has its own website. I think the one you need for this church is St Anne's Church, Whitstone. If you scroll down the page, you'll find the contact details for the churchwardens, who usually hold the keys to the church and can be incredibly knowledgeable about the history of the building. Hope this helps.
