On old maps of around circa 1700 to 1800, this so called Holy Well, is marked with just the word "TANK" , with a hunting bridge next to it across the ruver. The pathway down from the church, continued on the far side of the bridge, and joined up with the bridleway / road, further up in the woods.

Beautiful well. park at the church and walk down the hill to the well house 150yds over through the cattle gate to the well house which has a beautiful carving of Our Lady on it and a plaque explaining the history of it. lift the 2 metal lids and you can draw water from the bucket very easy to fill a bottle up from. the water is as good as Lourdes. beautiful cold and crystal clear near the river. worth a visit.

Re: St Mary the Virgin's Well by Anonymous on Monday, 31 January 2005
Hi, my name is David Wood. I live in Townsville, Queensland, Queensland and am a Family Historian. In 1992, as an Australian Serviceman on exchange, I had the great honour of attending Remembrance Day Service at St Mary's. In attendance were 120 Fellow Australian Servicemen and a number of British Dignitaries. Following the Service my Unit then marched up the main road to one of the Local Inn for refreshments and socializing, Australian Troops had not marched publically in the district for 75 years, not since the First World War. Over a period of three weeks, a portion of our Posting, we refurbished the Rising Sun Badge found nearby on one the hill slopes. A momentous occasion had by all. Very recently I was pleasantly surprised as a result of Family History Research. My Great Uncle John Basil Wood, my Father's Father's eldest Brother, convalesced at Codford during the latter part of World War One. Today I now regret my not being aware of this particular time in Uncle Bas's life. Uncle Bas, as he is referred to by my Father and I now do so, had barely made 17 years of age when he was wounded. My Great Grandparents were so concerned, as all Parents have been and continue to do so, that because of a limit of information provided by Authorities at the time they sold up and left Cairns Queensland they left for Sydney New South Wales, some 2400 kilometres distant.
My ambition, as with all ancestors removed or otherwise, is to gather any and all information possible in the short time allocated me.
This brings me to the purpose of our contact. I am hoping your Organisation, yourself, or some other would be able to provide me with information, no matter how meaningless, concerning Codford St Mary and Codford St Peter with reference to Imperial Forces stationed in the area. I can only express my gratitude in respect of you having taken the time to read my mail, but also my heartfelt thanks for any and all information provided me.

Again, Thank You
