Barrow Cemetery in Berkshire

Visited the site today and managed to locate 4 of the barrows shown on the map. 2 large undamaged bell barrows, a badly dug away bell barrow and the low almost ploughed out remains of a bowl barrow.

The 1st bell barrow is situated in the south west corner of a school playing field and is in good condition but rather overgrown with ferns.

The 2nd well preserved bell barrow can be found to the north along the bridleway near the electricity substation. Next to this is the badly dug away bell barrow.

The ploughed out remains of the bowl barrow can be seen to the north of the sports field beneath the middle of the sports field.

AB: There are four barrows in a row, plus a fifth just about in line at the corner of the sports field. Also one in a garden 1/2 km to the NW. Full scheduling reports on the various barrows are linked below.

Re: Borson Barrows - pathway by GalaxyLiz on Tuesday, 30 October 2018
(User Info | Send a Message)
Walking across the field there is an indentation in a line from the corner of the field up hill over the ploughed out bowl barrow which connects to the side of the complete bell barrow in the corner of the field. It can be clearly seen on Google maps satellite view. I always thought it was a dried out stream but as it goes up hill (the ploughed out barrow) and is very straight this seems unlikely. It then forms part of the field boundary so is likely to have been there for some time. I have found what seems to be another barrow just off the 90 degree turn in Little Aldershot Lane which, I think, would fall on the same straight path.

The path has been lost in the fields but you can see what appears to be it going through a garden at the end of the cul de sac off Little Aldershot Lane.

The 1st Ordinance Survey map dated 1886 shows 2 in the field on the other side of Brimpton Road which are not there any more though there is uneven ground in the woods behind them which could be the remains. It also shows 1 in the field on the other side of Brimpton Road above Inhurst Lane. This field for many years had mounds of earth and a pond which could have been the remains of a barrow. Sadly all traces have now been removed. I could provide some pictures but can't work out how to upload them. Nine Barrows of Borson by Anonymous on Sunday, 01 June 2014
There were originally 9 barrows. i have a reprint of the first Ordnance Survey map which shows 3 in the field opposite the barrow in the corner of the sports field. It is 1 inch = 60 miles so it''s not very precise and they could be in woods behind the field where there are a lot of small raised piles of earth. It is very boggy here in the winter and they could have been eroded or even deliberately destroyed. One of them should be in the next field down but the only raised ground I think is recent. There is a pool of water in the field so the barrow could have been dug out to the level of the moat leaving the ground below the water level.

Are you using Firefox? For years Firefox and similar browsers always used to restore your comment when you went 'Back'. They seem to have recently changed this which is really annoying. Fixing this on all our comment boxes is going to be tricky. You can always 'Copy' long comments before posting just in case but it's always the time you forget that this goes wrong. Any suggestions welcome.

      Andy,

is there any way the comments box could be set up so that it only becomes 'live' and able to receive text once the right (or perhaps any) number has been put into the little box?

Six barrows in total here by Andy B on Monday, 21 March 2011
(User Info | Send a Message)
There are four barrows in a row, three of which are bell barrows and one a
bowl barrow. The barrows are orientated ENE-WSW with a maximum distance of
250m from one end to the other.

The barrow at SU57636258 is a bowl barrow surviving as a low earthwork. It stands to a height of 0.5m and has a diameter of 30m.

The barrow at SU57706261 is a bell barrow visible on both
sides of a fenceline. The site has a diameter of 30m and survives to a
height of 1m. Surrounding the mound are a narrow berm and an outer ditch from
which material for the mound was quarried. This survives as a slight
earthwork in places but as a buried feature elsewhere.

The bell barrow at SU57756265 has an overall diameter of 35m, is 2m high and comprises a central mound, narrow berm and an outer ditch 4m wide and 0.4m deep.
[Again I would say 2m is an underestimate, it looked 3m high to me]

A further bell barrow at SU57816267 has a diameter of 60m. The central mound is
25m across and stands to a height of 1.5m. Surrounding the mound is a berm
12m wide and a ditch 5m wide and 0.3m deep.

http://magic.defra.gov.uk/rsm/12074.pdf

Plus a fifth just about in line at the corner of the sports field at SU57396248.

55m in diameter and stands to a height of 2m.
[AB: I would say this is an underestimate AB, it looked like 3m at least]
The central mound has a diameter of 30m. This is surrounded by
a berm c.5m across, a low bank and a ditch from which the mound material
was quarried. This survives to a width of 7.5m and is 0.5m deep.

http://magic.defra.gov.uk/rsm/12234.pdf

Also one in a garden 1/2 km to the NW at SU56966294. Maximum diameter of 60m.
The central mound is 25m across and survives to a height of 2.5m. This is
surrounded by a berm c.5m wide, a bank c.5m wide and 0.5m high and a wide
shallow ditch 8m across and up to 0.4m deep.

I have an old map and a book written by a local historian which confirms that there were 9 barrows. There are quite a few earth works around here though so it is difficult to know which count as the 9 Borson Barrows.
