The remains of the barrow still seem largely intact, and it is several metres high along its central axis. At the centre of the southern side is a rock lined chamber, about 2½ m in length by 1½ metres in width, 1m height, which has obviously been restored, as the roof is now supported on steel bars. The opening to the chamber has a curved, dry stone walled forecourt, and there is a blocking stone across the opening. Apparently, other chambers were found along the northern side of the barrow, and the remains of many skeletons were found in them.

Lanhill submitted by Thorgrim : The surviving burial chamber on the south side of the Lanhill long barrow. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Lanhill long barrow is behind a hedgerow to the south of the A420 just outside Chippenham, (ST 877747). Much damaged when a false entrance was removed in 1909, but it is still 56m long and nearly 4m high. There were three burial chambers, but only one on the south side survives.

Along with the reconstruction, the diagram details when parts of the long barrow were destroyed or quarried away. There was a lot of reflection, so I have edited the image to make the poster as clear as possible.

I visited this long barrow 35 years , i remember it well, a very powerful place.

I remember meeting a local there who told me that some years previous work was being done on the road nearby and the night Watchmen refused to stay there overnight after the first night as they heard strange , otherworldly noises all night!

I would like to return there one day.

The Goblin. There was a goblin who lived in a barrow, he came out at night the colour of a marrow, looking for food & on the local farmer he played tricks just for kicks, he laughed & danced but up at the sky he glanced, near sunrise, time to go back home before he''s caught & dies. written by Andrew Williams. on the 27/12/17/.

Re: Lanhill by Anonymous on Sunday, 24 September 2017
Back in 2009 on one of my visits to lanhill long barrow I had a strange shamanic experience when I went into a dream like state where I found it difficult to move & felt pinned to the ground by some energy force from the earth, I could hear voices nearby but there was no one there. The sky seemed to go darker even though it was bright sunny day, it became a pleasant feeling after feeling strange. It was as if time had stood still for a short time even though it seemed longer.

I reached for a drink as I felt dehydrated & slowly the sensation faded away & I was back, although I hadn''t moved from the same spot I had travelled spiritually in this timeless ancient site of our ancestors.

I go to lanhill longbarrow several times a year and find it a very sacred place and haven. I either cycle out there or go by bus with my collie dog. I was interviewed there for a channel 5 programme which was screened in 2015 three times. I also made a short film about mystical places in the west country which included lanhill longbarrow, which I showed at the cube cinema, bristol.

Thanks Andy, that's interesting. What was the Channel 5 programme? (It might still be on catch-up viewing)

hi andy, the programme I took part in was called 'oaps behaving badly'. Fun title. I'm not a pensioner but qualified for the programme on channel 5 as I was 60, cheers andy-thewitchyman.

I have probably driven within yards past this chambered barrow several hundred times and didnt know of its existence until recently. Amazing what a thick hedge can obscure !

This very nice long barrow, which lies on an east west axis, is in a field just to the south of the A420 a couple of miles east of Chippenham. The remains of the barrow seem largely intact, and it is several metres high along its central axis.

I think TheCaptain means it is a couple of miles 'west' of Chippenham. (I'm always getting my east and west muddled too!) Recently found that my gran came from a village near there, so may get to explore area in summer!

Problems like these have only occurred since the famous BBC comment upon the fall of the Berlin Wall - 'The West became East and the East became West' - I am so glad others have to pause and think about this - now which is NW and which SE or is it SSW? Oh! I give up!!!! It should be easier if I turn the Map upside down - now where is North? I have now got a headache
