Ffynnon Ishow
Ffynnon Ishow submitted by Sunny100 : A close-up view of Ffynnon Ishow at Patrishow. The well basin is built over with a square stonework structure that has niches for the placing of flowers and offerings. The water always looks fairly clear. Twigs in the shape of crosses are left around the well. St Issui dwelt here in the 6th or 7th century and was martyred by a person for whom he gave sanctuary to. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Holy Well or Sacred Spring in Powys

From Coflein NPRN 306285: "A spring issues into a drystone, open-ended, slab-roofed chamber, 1.4m by 0.7m and 1.1m high, which has small niches set into it."

The Journal of Antiquities also includes an entry for this holy well - see their page for Partrishow Church, Forest Coal Pit, Powys, which includes information about the churchyard cross and this well. The Journal entry includes a photograph, a description and background information on both the well and its waters, together with St Issui, a 6th century hermit who lived beside the well but who was martyred. The well became a place of pilgrimage in medieval times, and is still a place of pilgrimage today; the well has niches within to place offerings or flowers.

Ffynnon Ishow or St. Ishow's holy well near Crickhowell is a pre-Christian spring. In the 6th or 7th century AD the hermit St Ishow or Issui came to live by the spring and imparted his holiness to it's water. However, poor St. Ishow met a martyr's death at the hands of a man he had given sanctuary to. Pilgrims still come to visit the well and leave cross-shaped twigs there. They also place coins in the water - which is still said to be curative. Close by a Maltese cross is carved on a stone. The church up the hill is Medieval in date. Within can be found St Ishow's cell and on the wall 'the figure of doom' which is a painted skeleton that apparently can never be painted over or removed - because it always comes back again. A ley line runs from the holy well up through the church-yard - which is said to be a 'portal in time'.

Coldrum, in case anyone tries to find the Well at the church gate as shown on the Street View location, the well is actually down the hill where the lane bends fairly sharply.

If you follow Street View back out of the church entrance & head downhill, it is possible to see the steps on the inner part of the bend.

I know that many people assume that the old stone building in the churchyard is the well housing - in fact, that is where the rector stabled his horse while he was taking services, according to some of the very rich material available on the history of this beautiful church.

The lane to both locations is narrow and not for people who are averse to reversing a long way when necessary - but what a joy they both are. There is in fact a long-distant footpath going right by the church for those who want to 'earn' the delights...

Thats correct PAB, the well as you say is at the bottom of the hill (in the cwm) not at the lychgate.

I think the wall at the right-hand side has been rebuilt recently, it looks much longer now - more places to place offerings etc.
