Darren Esgob submitted by Darkside : I believe this to be darren esgob in wales map ref: SO242315  - I have been in contact with CADW and monuments and records and they are currently investigating.   (Vote or comment on this photo)
From Hay Bluff (SO245368) (Hay-on-Wye) head towards Abergavenny on the Gospel Pass. Near Capel-y-ffin there is a right turn which is marked as no through road. Park opposite, and proceed up this track past the monastery. It is possible to follow this track up to the top past the farm houses and cross the stream there, and walk back down the other side of the valley to the steep shale slopes opposite where the circle is.

It is possible to cross the stream nearer the circle and cut a few miles off the journey. I attempted to gain permission to use this shorter route for my return journey and was told by the occupier of the cottage at the top of the valley that the landowner was not likely to object. This route IS NOT consistent with public rights of way, but it is possible to traverse the stream quickly and without harming or disturbing fences or livestock.

If you wish to cross the stream opposite the circle and cut across the valley the best place to do this is past the small campsite on the left of the lane where the wooded area gives way to an open path. Head West to the stream. If you are able, it is possible to climb down the bank (steep), cross the stream on stepping stones and rocks, climb the opposite bank and walk up the hill to the West. You are aiming for the steep shale slopes of the opposite side of the valley; you may pass a sunken ring cairn which has collapsed inwards on your ascent. The circle is situated on a plateau at the foot of these steep slopes opposite a huge square shaped bolder. When facing west there will be a small hill on your left with the plateau to your right.

The Circle:
There are many stones buried here, but they are hard to distinguish due to the close proximity of the shale slope and the abundance of erratic glacial moraine. However, the context of the site, and the apparent symmetry of the stones would indicate that this is a constructed circle rather than the arbitrary product of a glacier or land slip.

There is one large, broad standing stone (about 1 metre tall) flanked by a smaller one at the East side (front?) of the circle looking out onto the valley. Arcing around this are several large stones which have fallen and are now partially buried by fern and moss; however, it is still possible to define their outline. This is the only part of the circle that is visible amongst the vegetation, although lumps in the ground on the west side suggest more are present but buried.

I would be very interested to hear of anyone else’s experiences of this circle (if indeed it is a circle), as it seems as if it has not been visited for a very long time. I believe the map reference may be a little inaccurate as well, maybe more of a 241316? However, the map reference itself is somewhat a mystery as it appears on no OS maps, and the site is not recognised by CADW or local Monuments and Records.

Hola darkside,

I'm slowly putting together a book on Prehistoric Breconshire, and I intend to visit Darren Esgob at some point (hopefully end of this month if the weather is agreeable).

I have dug out a grid ref for another stone circle nearby.

It's a peculiar area as there is a standing stone marked on OS maps not too far from Darren Esgob which I can't find an entry for in the RCAHMW book either accepting or rejecting it. Perhaps it's to do with the elavation/access/weather that the authorities never get up there.

To be honest I never get up there, I'm usually scrabbling around the foothills looking for the Neolithic burial chambers rather than higher up looking for Bronze Age remains.

Anyhows, your photograph and in particular directions will prove most helpful to me hopefully in three weeks time.

UPDATE: - the site will be visited soon by a CADW Scheduling Officer, which should hopefully shed some light on things.

There are more photos available if anyone is particularly interested in this site - e-mail me for further details.

There's a Coflein record - "Waun Goch" with photos from 2007 for a stone at more or less the same position. Doesn't look like the same stone, though.

I have recently visited this site but have very little information on it. I have been in contact with CADW and Regional Sites and Monuments and they have confirmed that this is not a recognised circle. However, CADW have expressed an interest in sending someone out to investigate. If anyone has information regarding this site please contact me via e-mail.

Many thanks,

Rhys Davies.
