Wirksworth Moor Standing Stone
Wirksworth Moor Standing Stone submitted by enkidu41 : This stone stands about 1.7 metres high and has been finely dressed. Both these factors make it doubtful that its primary use was a cattle rubbing stone. Two similar, but somewhat shorter, stones are to be found as gateposts at the entry to the field. Wirksworth Moor Standing Stone submitted by enkidu41 : This pair of dressed stones are to be found at the entrance to the field containing the Wirksworth Moor Standing Stone. They both bear signs of having their tops truncated. Whilst they now serve a mundane purpose, it is very tempting to suggest that all 3 may have once been part of a grander structure. Re: Wirksworth Moor by Anonymous on Tuesday, 23 June 2020
The stone on Wirksworth Moor, at Wigwell opposite the Malt Shovel Inn, lies on the line of a field boundary in the 1806 Enclosure Map of Wirksworth, it is most probably a former gate post with the rest of the wall having been demolished to make the field bigger, long ago (Wirksworth Archaeological Society, 2020).
