Early Christian Sculptured Stones & Saxon Crypt in Derbyshire

St Wystan's, Repton is hugely significant, being the main home of the Mercian royal family for near 300 years. Due to the considerable spread of Mercia at the time, it is also arguably the site of a former capital of Great Britain, as we now have it.

A near perfectly preserved Saxon Crypt is the main must-see attraction, with some fragments of Saxon stones in the porch, and some mounted on the walls.

See the official Church Website for extensive details for everything you would need to know.

It also has the tallest spire in South Derbyshire, and situated next to the noted school, it is hard to miss.

St Wystan's (Repton) submitted by RoyBickerstaffe : This unbelievable Anglo-Saxon crypt below St Wynstan's dates from the abbey that was founded in the 7th century for men and women. Fantastic atmosphere! Derbyshire SK 303271 (1 comment - Vote or comment on this photo)

St Wystan's (Repton)
St Wystan's (Repton) submitted by JordJ : Early Anglo Saxon cross-shaft, with delicate human figures and foliage. It is said to have been brought there from Ingleby, interestingly - according to the Repton Village History Group - there was no tradition of Anglo-Saxon structures there. The church was replaced by St Saviours at Foremark by Burdetts in 1600s. (Vote or comment on this photo)

St Wystan's (Repton) submitted by JordJ : An interesting gravestone within the church Graveyard, very visible, on the left hand side as you walk towards the main door of the church. I have never seen anything like it...

St Wystan's (Repton) submitted by TimPrevett : This is a copy of an early 9th Century gravestone, the original now being in Derby Museum. Mounted on the west wall, if I recall correct.
