Peak District 2012 - Beeley Moor with John Barnatt
Peak District 2012 - Beeley Moor with John Barnatt submitted by baz : "I can see Minning Low from here" (Vote or comment on this photo)
The Megalithic Portal Live in the Peak District was held on Saturday 28th and Sunday 29th July. Part of the Festival of British Archaeology. A free weekend of guided walks and talks with archaeologists, prehistory experts and enthusiasts.

With talks, displays, book stall and refreshments at Birchover Reading Room, near Stanton Moor. There are dozens of ancient sites within easy walking distance, just see the map further down this page.

Saturday Morning, 28th July

Walk with Tim Prevett from History and Mystery Tours to Nine Stones Close and other sites around Birchover such as Robin Hood's Stride. Start time 10am running through until about 12.30pm.

Start outside Birchover Reading Room, past Rowtor Rocks, walking to Nine Stones Close, Robin Hood's Stride, Castle Ring, Hermit's Cave, Cratcliff Rocks, and also featuring three locations from the film The Princess Bride. Please ensure you are geared up for a longish walk and be prepared for the weather conditions.

A guided walk with Peak District National Park archaeologist and stone circle / cairn circle enthusiast John Barnatt, who will be leading a 2-3 hour walk with lots of stops to look at the various fascinating and little known prehistoric sites on Beeley Moor.

If you missed out on a place, see the details of the other Saturday and Sunday walks as there is bound to be something else of interest. You are also welcome to come over to Birchover Reading Room on Saturday morning where there will be other things getting started.

Saturday - Talks and Events in Birchover Reading Room

From 11am (setup permittiing) we hope to be showing some films of visits to various ancient sites made by Dick Diamond - see note below for more details

1pm Erin Robinson from the Heather and Hillforts project. Conserving the hillforts and habitats of the heather moorland while reconnecting people to the uplands of the Clwydian Range and Llantysilio Mountains in North Wales

2pm John Charlesworth, interpretive guide from Creswell Crags Museum and Visitor Centre who will focus on the recently discovered rock art.

3pm Q&A session with Peak District National Park archaeologist John Barnatt who is a great stone circle and ring cairn enthusiast so have your questions ready.

4pm Daniel Brown and Andy Alder from Nottingham Trent University talking about their recent 3D modelling of the standing stone on Gardom's Edge, and research into archaeoastrnomical alignments

From 4.50pm - unfortunately due to other commitments Tim Prevett hasn't been able to complete the research for his talk on Ritual Landscapes of Mid Wales so we're going to postpone that to our next event.

Instead we'll fit in some short slide shows, these are likely to be Eileen Grimshaw with the Sacred sites of Tibet and Peter Boyle with some slides from the Outer Hebrides. There should also be time for another film from Dick Diamond and perhaps someone else would like to step up at the last minute for 15 minutes - let Andy B know.

Saturday Late Afternoon / Evening

6.30pm Guided Walk led by Guy Stephenson, meeting at Birchover Reading Room: 'Stanton Moor - A journey into Bronze Age Derbyshire'. Around 2.5 hours with frequent stops looking at the many cairns and stone circles on Stanton Moor. Please ensure you are geared up for a long walk on the moor as it will get chilly as the evening progresses. To finish with a chill out at Nine Ladies Stone Circle

Sunday 29th July: Morning

Semi guided Walk around Gardom's Edge with Jamie Stone. Meet at 9.30 for 9.45am in the public car park next to the Robin Hood pub just off the A619/B6050. (Ordnance Survey grid reference: SK280721, Postcode: DE45 1PU) Walking up onto Gardom's Edge spotting archaeology as we go. Taking in the cairn circle, Three Men barrow, Megs Walls (Neolithic enclosure), the standing stone, the famous cup and ring carving and one lesser known cup and ring carving. We will also try and locate one other potential piece of rock art below Birchen Edge as we head back to the car park. Estimated walk time 2-3 hours. The walk will mostly be on well trodden footpaths, but will be through high heather and boggy ground at times so may be hard going for inexperienced walkers.

Sunday Talks in Birchover Reading Room

11am Andy Burnham - The Megalithic Portal - Little known stones from around the world, an illustrated talk.

12pm Rose Welch - The Folklore and Practice of Well Dressing in Derbyshire, an illustrated talk.

12.50pm Eileen Grimshaw - Prehistoric Rock Art in the American South West - An illustrated talk featuring prehistoric villages on top of the Grand Canyon, Spider Woman in Canyon de Chey, rock art in the Painted Desert, the Valley of Fire, Chaco Canyon, Horseshoe Canyon and lots more.

In some of the breaks we will showing films of visits to various ancient sites made by Dick Diamond

2.15pm Simon Charlesworth - The Brecon Beacons - Megaliths, Myths and Mysteries.
Simon will outline his latest research which aims to show how the myths, legends and archaeology of the area may be more inter-linked than previously thought.

3pm Dr Ian Parker Heath - Research Archaeologist speaking about the Arbor Low environs Project and how you can get involved as a volunteer.

Unless you know the area well we suggest you come into Birchover from the B5056. The turning is signposted Birchover 3/4mi from the B5056 and with a brown sign for The Druid Inn.

The hall is at SK 236 621 (Postcode: DE4 2BL). Suggested parking is along the road 'The Mires' as you come in to Birchover from the B5056 - along from the modern stone carving with the hole in it - see the Street View link below. Note there is NO parking immediately by the hall. Parking for Stanton Moor is at the east side of the village at SK 241 625 (see this Street View link). From here follow the footpath from the rear of the car park, which is a 500 m walk downhill to Birchover Reading Room. The footpath is quite steep so please be careful. Or please park considerately in Birchover village. The Druid Inn also has a car park next door to the reading room that you can use if you are going to be partaking in their hospitality.

Choice of sandwiches
Home made cakes with vegan options

Due to the limited space we cannot guarantee seats will be available to members however they will get priority in the members seating area for all talks. We reserve the right to decline entry once the safe limit on numbers is reached.

There are two excellent pubs within walking distance in the village of Birchover, the Red Lion and the Druid Inn. There is a very good camp site at Barn Farm and others will be camping close by. Why not make a weekend of it?

(User Info | Send a Message)
Questions and answers from Megalithic Portal members and John Barnatt the Peak District National Park archaeologist and stone circles enthusiast. How were stone circles constructed? Lots of thoughts on archaeoastronomy and possible alignments. How did John get into archaeology?

John also led a morning guided walk looking at the fascinating and little known prehistoric sites on Beeley Moor.

Thanks, 'Part 2' will be ready in a few weeks, where Dan Brown and Andy Alder's Gardom's Edge standing stone ideas are presented and well and truly debated with John B and the rest of the audience. I've not forgotten John Charlesworth from Creswell Crags's talk either, but this one was quicker to get up as there are no slides.

Best weekend I've had for a long time. The highlight must be the unplanned invite from the O'Rourkes at Rockingstone Farm to view the stone - and did it rock, to the accompaniment of a sound show of thunder! Hopefully someone will provide a link to the many videos taken there.
Thank you Andy for all the effort you put into making this event a huge success.

Hi folks,
Weekend event a success ! Thanks to the 20 or so people that came on my walk. Hopefully I gave you a taste of this magical landscape and it's truly glorious history. We made £88.80 profit on the food stall so we will be sending £100 to Mustard Tree to help them feed hungry and desperate people. Always a good feeling. Another positive outcome from Stanton Moor. Well done Andy on all your work. Your love of stones is intense. 4,000 years ago you would have been our chieftain !!
So good to meet more portallers. We are as one.
It was superb to take a group to the Ladies and not one person even thought of sitting on the stones. Reverance, respect and understanding. Thank you.
I have 10 copies of Aimee's PhD thesis on CD entitled "Stanton Moor - An Ethnographic Study" that arrived too late to hand out on the walk so I am happy to post one to anyone that would like to know more about Stanton Moor. It made me cry reading bits of it. Thoroughly recommended. Email me at pointbutted@googlemail.com if you would like a copy.

Roll on the next event . . .

Well the four of us are back in Surrey in one piece although all the stuff is still in a huge pile on the floor here! I think it got many stones people together for possibly the first time and was intensely valulable if knackering.

I'm struggling how to thank everyone individually but I think special mentions have to go to Juamei for carrying the huge projector screen from work on the train and getting it down to us in time for the start and of course to Guy and Miz for preparing and clearing up after the food which involves much hard graft. It was indeed a group effort and everyone contributed (and can continue to - please send in your photos, videos and other info)

I can't mention everyone but I was staggered at the speed at which the combined crowd sprang into action at the end of Sunday to stack the chairs and tables in what seemed about 5 minutes flat, and then to come and dismantle the marquee in similarly record time - and without breaking it which was something of a miracle. That made the rest of the clear up easy and was indeed a powerful moment. We have donated the marquee to Ian's Arbor Low archaeology project as it wouldn't go in the car and we won't be needing it again as I will be booking bigger venues in future!

Great weather other than a minor flood when the heavens opened right in the middle of Rose's talk about the importance of the water god(s) in people's lives. Don't ask me or Guy about the details yet as we missed most of the talks outside in the marquee but we will catch up on the videos as time allows. There was some very lively debate after some of them which I have hopefully captured and will bring to you over the coming weeks. And some things from Ian's Arbor Low talk at the end that we are sworn to secrecy about at the moment :)

Now enjoying watching back the many hours of Olympic cycle road races that we missed, around roads I know very well. I am going to try and capture the races going past the little Pyrford standing stone! Off to watch the time trials in Cobham on Wednesday if anyone is around then. Things may go quiet from me again for a while while we catch up and recover...

It was a fantastic Saturday for me - even though I missed the walk.
I will definitely be going to more.
It was good to meet the people I met, people with the same interests.
I'm only sorry I couldn't make the Sunday.
The experts/speakers were really good and what's more, more open minded than I expected.

Change to programme for 5pm on Saturday by Andy B on Thursday, 26 July 2012
(User Info | Send a Message)
5pm Saturday - unfortunately due to other commitments Tim Prevett hasn't had time to complete the research for his talk on Ritual Landscapes of Mid Wales so we're going to postpone that to our next event.

Instead we'll have more time for another film from Dick Diamond or perhaps someone else would like to step up and talk at the last minute - let me know.

Tim has lots planned for his Sat morning walk including a look for more little known sites like the very elusive Dudwood stone circle - or as an alternative the group can split and some come back to the hall at that point.

    Andy,

I won't have time to prepare a 'proper' talk as I will be on the road most of tomorrow, but I have a selection of portal-type photos from the Outer Hebrides which give a feel for the range of sites there - happy to fill 15/20 mins if needed? There are a couple which may be rock art - or may be natural.

Sounds good for an impromptu talk Peter, if you just put the photos you want in a folder then rename so that their file names start 01 02 03 04 in the order you want, then you can just show them as a slide show like that. Anyone else for 15 minutes of 'fame'?

I read it from cover to cover and it is a wonderful study of this ancient site and the people that visit. She can't make it up for Saturday but I will talk about some of her observations . . .

Megalithic Portal Live Tweeting - #megplive by Andy B on Wednesday, 25 July 2012
(User Info | Send a Message)
There are still plenty of places on Tim's Nine Stones Close / Princess Bride walk, Jamie's Gardom's Edge and Guy's Stanton Moor walks but please note there are only 60 seats in the hall so I think it's going to be very full up for the more popular talks. There may only be standing room if you can manage that. We will get a bigger venue next time but the location where we are is so good that we had to go for it. Come over for some refreshments though even if you can't get to a talk.

There should (phone signals permitting) be live tweeting on the day - join in with hashtag #megplive

Cheers.

Just to say that both of the pubs in the village get very booked up so if you're wanting to book something to eat there on either evening or lunchtime then I would get your booking in now. We will of course have daytime refreshments at the hall as well. See above for details.

Hi Andy, I enjoyed last years outing at The Bullring Henge and look forward to this years 2 day spectacular. I should have a car with 3 spare seats if needed. Please book me a seat in the hall and hopefully a place on the Saturday guided walk with John Barnatt. (or Tim's)

On another note; I have a number of DVD's that I've made over the years - amateur type, but get most Stones in an area included. These are not for sale for copyright reasons (music etc) but I thought it may be good to view them (on Saturday night perhaps?), if a venue with a TV or projector can be found. Of interest may be:
Peak Stones: from my visit last Mid-Summer taking in most Stone Sites from the area.
Brecon Beacons & The Presceli's which may fit in with Simon Charlesworth's talk.
Callanish & Outer Hebrides: the Major Lunar Standstill a few years ago
West Cork: Collection of mainly Stone Circles from this area so rich in them.
They each last from 45mins to 1hr long.
Please let me know what you think.
I will probably arrive on Friday, so will be available to help with setting up (and have knowledge of marquee erection!) Look forward to the whole weekend.
Dick Diamond

Hello Dick, We have time on Saturday morning / lunchtime to show some films - possibly Sunday morning as well. I'll look forward to seeing them so I can see how they fit in.

On the marquee, I'm advised that it's not tough enough to be left up overnight so we'll have to put it up on Saturday (and Sunday) morning.

There will be a few of us there on Friday evening - so come along if you want to say hello, I don't think there's that much setting up we can do on Friday, although we could spend some time decorating the inside of the hall with photos and suchlike.

    See you there!

Update on Friday - there are people in the hall until 8pm on Friday so we can't start setting up until then. However we will be there after that so if anyone wants to turn up and help decorate the hall with some pictures or suchlike then you're very welcome.

Hello J & S, sorry your message got caught up with all the 'members wanting seats' messages that I've not replied to yet but I will shortly. Thanks for the offer of help which is much appreciated. We're going easy on the balloons this year (phew!) but the society has just bought a 3 x 9m marquee like this which we will need to put up and anchor outside the front of the hall on both days. Miz would also appreciate some help with serving the food for perhaps an hour or so. Space in the hall is very limited but helpers will get first priority. There's still plenty of space on Tim's walk. See you there.

Hi folks,
Just worked out the route of my walk. It is going to be 1.4 miles up and down (mainly up) moderately rocky paths to finish at the Nine Ladies. To return to Birchover will be 1.5 miles (mainly downhill) so a total of 2.9 miles of reasonably vigorous walking. We will see 4 stone circles, about 20 cairns, 4 venerated natural rock features, several cup marks, 2 ancient quarries, and some sensational views of Derbyshire. It can get windy up on top of the moor and the paths are fairly rocky so I would recommend walking boots and Goretex. Hopefully it will be gloriously sunny with an amazing sunset . . .

I am really hoping to give you all a proper sense of place here in this majestic ancient landscape.

See you in 2 weeks. Please note revised shorter distance to make it a bit more accessible.

I'm getting really excited about this years event. Last year was super and led to more awareness of the Bullring and some new lines of research. I now see people visiting the henge rather than dumping sofas in it !! I get a marvelous feeling every time I visit.
Plans are being worked on for my guided walk on the moor. I am delighted to be showing you folk around this very special area. It will be a real pleasure.
Looking forward to meeting you all . . .

Is there still room for me on John Barnatt's talk/walk on Saturday Morning, 28th July 9.30-10.00. I have wanted to meet John ever since I read his PHD thesis on the architecture of Stone Circles.

Hello Delwyn, you just squeaked in with a place, you're booked in - this walk is now full but there are lots of other walks and activities to be announced shortly on this page.

I'll be back in touch nearer the time as we need to sort out some car
sharing - either to give or accept lifts.

Look forward to seeing you all

    Andy

Here's a short version to post on your blog or email:

The Megalithic Portal Live in the Derbyshire Peak District, Saturday 28th and Sunday 29th July 2012.

A free weekend of guided walks and talks with archaeologists and prehistory experts. With displays, book stall and refreshments in Birchover Reading Room, near Stanton Moor. There are dozens of ancient sites within easy walking distance, check the map on our web site.
http://www.megalithic.co.uk/article.php?sid=2146414093

Birchover Reading Room, Rowtor Lane, Birchover, nr Matlock, Derbyshire

The hall is at SK 236 621 (Postcode: DE4 2BL). Suggested parking is along the road 'The Mires' that you come in to Birchover on from the B5056. Please note there is NO parking immediately by the hall. Parking for Stanton Moor is at the east side of the village at SK 241 625.

Already looking forward to it. I'll bring a box of stone axes . . .

I have a mission to find Dudwood stone circle. I contacted the poster of the picture and he had lost his notebook and couldn't tell me where his photo was taken. We could try to find it . . .
