Echoes: reverberations across millennia, an exhibition of funerary ceramics by Ann Bates

Through design, process and materials Echoes illustrates a connection between the Neolithic and the 21st century revealing how ancient practices of honouring the dead can still be relevant today. Often a difficult subject to address, this exhibition aims to evoke thought, discussion and a greater awareness.

Workshops with the artist will be available during the exhibition period, see social media for more details.

A Derbyshire gem.
Buxton Museum is a great little place. They have some very good displays of Derbyshire finds and some very useful descriptions. There are several items found on Stanton Moor (including 2 cremation urns - amazing). That should be enough on it's own to make you want to go.
I have had a stores visit there to research their stone axes and they have some interesting artifacts not on display. I found the staff superb. Smiling, helpful and knowledgeable.
I shall be visiting for the 4th time soon. It's that good.

The Mouselow stones in Buxton Museum & Art Gallery by Andy B on Tuesday, 26 July 2016
(User Info | Send a Message)
The Mouselow stones were first found at the site of Mouselow Castle (Castle Hill) in Glossop around 1840 by Reverend George Marsden when the area was being excavated to build a chapel. Reverend Marsden then took the stones and incorporated them into his house in Hadfield. After a few years the Duke of Norfolk requested to take custody of the stones, where they stayed until they were transferred to the Glossop Antiquarian Society. With the outbreak of war in 1939 the society disbanded and the stones lay unknown in a basement for decades. They are now on display in the Wonders of the Peak at Buxton Museum and Art Gallery.

Very little is known about the area of Mouselow castle, and even less about the stones themselves. Mouselow castle is believed to be the site of an Iron Age hillfort which was subsequently used as a medieval motte and bailey castle. Some believe there could alternatively have been a medieval hunting lodge here instead, as this part of the peak district was densely forested 1000 years ago. Apparently in the 18th century there were indications of a building on the summit, including remains of a spiral staircase. However, as a lot of the area has been disturbed by quarrying, it is hard to know for certain and we are reliant on old descriptions of the site and often anecdotal evidence. The site has been excavated twice: in 1965 by Mr Scott and pupils from Glossop Grammar School and 1985 by Glynis Greenman.

The mystery of the stones is much more peculiar and recent, and has led to a belief in the area that the stones are cursed.

From Buxton Today 24 May 2004

Future bright at Buxton Museum

The visitor boom at Buxton Museum and Art Gallery is continuing with 27,898 people visiting during the last year – a rise of 4,174.

Rising visitor numbers have also led to an increase in donations made to the museum to more than £1,000 for the year. Sales in the museum shop are also up by more than £1,000 on last year's figure.

Since 2000/01 the annual total has increased by almost 11,000.

Derbyshire County Council member for community services, Councillor Bob Janes said: "We have had some excellent work running at the Buxton museum and this is reflected in the number of people now visiting."

Additions have been made to the collections including two portraits by Derbyshire artist Stephen Ashurst, a collection of flints by Leonard Waterhouse, a trophy cup presented to the first inspector of Derbyshire Constabulary on his retirement in 1882 and a collection of Women's Voluntary Services uniforms from World War Two.

The museum has also bought two pictures – a print by Trevor Hodgkisson of the Buxton Opera House and a mixed media art work entitled Forest by Nathan Birchenough from Buxton who was one of the top five pupils in A Level art in the country last year.

Exhibitions have been diverse and included Getting to Grips with Objects – work by children from four Buxton schools and a photographic exhibition by Kate Bellis.

Although quite small, the prehistory collection here is well worth visiting if you want to see some of the finds from the Neolithic and Bronze Age sites of Derbyshire.

Artefacts on display include:

Flints from Micah Salt's excavations at Five Wells Chambered Tomb in the 1800s. (There is also a nice reconstruction of the Five Wells tomb.)

A number of stone axes from the Derbyshire area.

Artefacts from Arbor Low including flint knives, scrapers, arrowheads, a hammer and a macehead.

A Cinereray urn asociated with a pygmy cup from Green Low.

A cup and Ring marked stone from Calton Pasture, Edensor.

Two Cinenrary Urns from Stanton Moor dating to the Early Bronze Age.
