Also mentioned in Twilight of the Celtic Gods by David Clarke and Andy Roberts.
The site has been excavated with evidence of Iron Age occupation thought to be a fort. The Pastscape entry for this site identifies the carved stones as of Celtic origin.

A series of stones was found by the Reverand George Marsden in the 1850's at Mouselow Castle, aproximately 11 of which are carved with a series of enigmatic images. A few have been identified; one as a "Shadow figure" that can be compared to a similar Roman carving from Maryport, Cumbria (see Ross, "Pagan Celtic Britain") and another as a horned male head. The other carvings have proved difficult to identify. These carvings were mistakenly identified as being from an Iron Age Celtic shrine when in fact a date of the medieval or post medieval period should be given to them. There is also the opinion that the Reverand Marsden created the carvings himself !
The stones are currently displayed in the Buxton Museum and art Gallery.

Very little is visible at this site, there has been quarrying in the past which has destroyed much of the area.

I was aware that this is an ancient Brigante settlement, in existence when the Romans built the nearby fort at Melandra (Ardotolia)
