Ancient Cross in Staffordshire

The Red Cross is thought to have been removed to the churchyard of St John's, Knypersley, from the nearby crossroads. Its date is uncertain but local lore has it that the cross was originally erected on the Trent/Mersey watershed that passes close by. The Head of Trent is only 2km ENE. Both sides of the head depict a carved cross within a circle suggesting an early date. However, on the present eastern face of the shaft, low down near its base, is depicted an anchor that is likely to be a relatively modern addition. Why a cross so far inland should carry an anchor is not known.
