Ancient Village or Settlement in Gwynedd

Gwynedd Archaeological Trust (GAT) describe the site as:

'located on a short spur running out of the east face of Moelwyn Bach and overlooking Llyn Ystradau (Tanygrisiau Reservoir). On the N side of the spur, the remains of an enclosure wall associated with the site can be seen. The main feature of the site is the partially destroyed orthostatic foundations, measuring 5.7x6.5m, the walls of which are 1m wide. The western end of the foundations have been concealed by the side wall of a later structure, itself poorly preserved. A sheep fold on the E edge of the site was probably used as such until the early part of the last century and is reasonably preserved. A circular building adjoining the sheep fold has been robbed of its larger stones. This has an external diameter of 6.5m and it's entrance is W facing.'

When I visited the site (second week in May) I noted that the spur was more of a terrace that measured 34m N to S by 17m E to W. The eastern side was naturally protected/defended by low cliffs, with the western side similarly protected by the raised bank leading to another level. The northern end was gradual but steeply sloping terrain with possible evidence of walling (mostly tumbled down the bank). The southern end was a gentler slope that would have provided an appropriate entry point and there was a poorly preserved dividing wall running E to W about 10m from the southern end that may have provided extra security?. All in all the site resembles a defended enclosure? I noted possible raised platforms with stone footings but the site is poorly preserved and difficult to interpret.

However, the site's location would have been advantageous to the occupants, and by today's standards quite des res given the wonderful scenery.
