Rock Art in Yorkshire (West)

This rock art panel is recorded in Boughey & Vickerman's "Prehistoric Rock Art of the West Riding Supplement (2018)", paged 225 to 227, which includes a map showing the location of the findspot of the panel, together with a photograph of the motifs and a drawing. Whilst not in situ, the panel is described as "a dressed rectangular block of buff-coloured gritstone (which) forms part of a retaining kerb edge to a private rockery at Cowgate Manor Barn …. currently measuring 0.80m along its longer axis, when fully excavated it was found to run 10 or more cms underground and to be 0.39m high and 0.29m wide at one end."

The panel has "a closely carved set of cups and rings running to all edges of the fragment, clearly indicating there was originally more to the design when it was first cut and dressed." A more detailed description says the motifs include: a large, apparently damaged double ring; a clear cup and double ring with some damage at the top; a line of five cups and single rings; a cup and ring to the right of a cup and double ring; a possible small cup and ring; and a possible small cup.

Dr. Boughey notes the panel may have come from the nearby Thornton Beck quarry, now disused and overgrown, as the colour and crystalline structure of this panel matches other rocks from that quarry.

Please note this panel is on private land. Permission must be obtained before visiting.
