Natural Rock Formation in Yorkshire (West) (previously thought to be a barrow)

Armshaw Lowe is a low, and rather unimpressive grassy mound in a field between Oxenhope and Denholme. Although marked on OS maps as an antiquity, it is no longer accepted as such by archaeologists, because of an excavation/desecration carried out in about 1970, when no evidence of a burial was found. The only published record of this consists of one sentence: “Exploration of a site on Brow Moor known as Almshaw Lowe proved it to be bed-rock and not a barrow” (C.V. Bellamy, Yorkshire Archaeological Journal, 42:6, 1971). However, I am sceptical about this negative conclusion, as the Lowe is clearly artificial, and, as it is a low and spreading mound, it is difficult to see how it could have been conclusively shown not to contain a burial. My confidence in the reliability of the report is also not helped by the author’s managing to both spell the mound’s name, and locate it incorrectly (it is not on Brow Moor, but on Black Moor, which is, however, not a moor, having been enclosed in 1777).

Update September 2017: This site is also features on The Northern Antiquarian (TNA) - see their entry for Armshaw Lowe, Oxenhope, West Yorkshire, which gives directions for finding this site together with a brief archaeology & history and a photograph.

Pastscape Monument No. 47911 has been updated to read: "A large, elongated, earthen mound oriented E - W, with sides merging into the natural contours of the ground, and a wide flat top. There are no traces of a ditch. The mound is not a long barrow, but a debased round barrow .... Natural rock formation, previously alleged to be a barrow."
