Ancient Cross in Yorkshire (West)

The very weathered remains of a roughly dressed cross head are built into the western wall of a lane near the top of Cross Lane, near to the primary school at Oxenhope. It is recorded as Pastscape Monument No. 47914, which tells us the stone measures only 15ins high and 24ins wide, and that "very little is known of its history".

The Journal of Antiquities also includes an entry for The Oxenhope Cross, Oxenhope, West Yorkshire, which includes photographs, a drawing of the cross (they report it is very easy to miss as it blends in with the rest of the wall), and a link to the Oxenhope Village history website. The JoA tells us the first record of the cross comes from the early 1830s, but it could be much earlier; there are more wayside crosses (plain and carved) on the moors around here.
