Coffin stone, Cragg Vale

This is a coffin stone. They were used to rest coffins on their way to consecrated burial grounds. This one is not that far away from the Te Deum coffin stone which you can find information on elsewhere on this website.

This coffin stone, in Cragg Vale, has the date 1652 carved into it along with a cross and some lettering. The stone sits right in the middle of the footpath going south from the Hinchcliffe Arms and on the west side of the Turvin Clough beck.
