The Tallers Cross or Tailor's Cross at SD.890423, stands in a memorial garden, beside the A56 Skipton Road about 2 miles N of Colne. It dates from the 13th century, but could be much earlier. Often described as a round-headed cross - the front is in quite good condition, but the back is heavily worn. At one time it had a longer pedestal but this was lost, some say buried in Kirk Field. A pair of pincers or scissors have been carved below the cross; this may be a masonic mark or a symbol of Christ's passion.
Legend has it that the Knights Hospitallers erected the cross - hence the name 'Tallers Cross'. They owned land at Alkincoats and Foulridge and they placed it at a pagan site (kirk Field) at the eastern edge of Burwains Lake (now called Foulridge Lower Reservoir), where it acted as a preaching cross. In the 1920s the cross was moved to it's current site. The front-side has probably seen some restoration.
Two legends are attributed to the cross, and both date from the Cival War. One recalls a tailor who was shot by Cromwell's troops; his body hung over the cross. The other tells of a maiden who waited for her lover who was involved in the Battle of Marston Moor. He was killed in the battle, but his bride to be could not accept his death - so every evening she waited for him at the cross. Later, she was murdered there by Royalist soldiers, her body then buried beside the cross. Because of that terrible tragedy local people called it Maiden's Cross. The name 'Salters Cross' is evidently due to it's position on the saltways, dating back from the Middle-Ages to more recent times.
