Holy Well or Sacred Spring in Lancashire

The Journal of Antiquities features a page for Finn’s Well, Haggate, Lancashire, which includes directions for finding this rather forgotten well, together with a photograph, description and its history. The visitor today might be forgiven for thinking this was just part of a water hazard on Nelson Golf Course!

The Journal tells us "The well stands close to a former farm known as Finsley. It is roughly oval in shape and edged all round with stonework. It measures about 70 feet in circumference and 20 feet across. There are two inlets, one, the main inlet issues with a steady, constant flow of water, while another inlet is largely dry", adding: "The well has on more than one occassion been confused with St Helena’s Well, which was located about a quarter of a mile to the south-west, where a house called St Helena used to stand, near to an OS trig point. The trig point is number 54621. However, sadly there is nothing much to see of St Helen's Spring today.
