Little Hograh Moor BS1 submitted by johndhunter : Stone on the left is the southerly of the two stones – April 2025. It was also used for target practice during WWII and as a result has several cup like marks on this its southerly face. (Vote or comment on this photo)
John D Hunter writes: When I first came across this pair of stones, many years ago now, my first impression was that they are standing stones, and I am still of that opinion. They are in a position on Little Hograh Moor which gives them a commanding view over an area known as Crown End, a prehistoric settlement area on Westerdale Moor.

Unknown to me at the time of my first visit but the stones marked the old Baysdale . Westerdale Parish boundary and the still existing Baysdale Estate.

There is little to no official information as regarding these stones and what there is can be misinterpreted. As of 2025 the NYMNPA HER 8179 for this site location describes the boundary line itself and whilst there are two stones at this location it just says boundary post C16. There is also another HER for this site location, its No. is 7327 and it just says; cup marked stone (neolithic). I could see what looked like cup marks on both upright stones at this location or at least that is what I though they were until I read THIS, apparently they were used for target practice during the war. Consequently I am not sure what the HER is referring to, though there are other stones lying about in this area.

I am however still of the opinion that these are prehistoric standing stones, they look much, much older than other C16 stones that I have seen on this boundary line, also why would you erect two boundary stones next to each other? Both of a substantial similar size, why go to all that effort just for boundary stones. I strongly suspect that they were already there when the boundary line was drawn. However as it is only an opinion I will list them as marker stones.

As regards the stones themselves both are about 42 inches tall, both are very well weathered, with the northerly stone being about 12 inches wide x 10 inches thick. The southerly stone is 14 inches wide x 7 inches thick.

Miscellaneous Info: According to Hayes* the Duncombe Park Estate Map of 1829 shows the site of Shinnera Cross in this area and gives a map reference of NZ 650066. He says it was a simple stone way marker, though an early cross could have been replaced. This is very plausible as the nearby track named as the Skinner Howe Cross Road (path) is the track to Baysdale Abbey where there was once a Cistercian Nunnery (1189 – 1539)
