Sidwood Iron Age Settlement
Sidwood Iron Age Settlement submitted by Anne T : This was our first view of the settlement, on the left hand side of the footpath from Tarset Burn. The site is in a forest clearing, demarked by an old tree which stands on its own. The foundations of two hut circles are clearly visible through the grass and bracken, and the entrance (to the left hand middle of the photograph) and sunken yard are clearly identifiable. Ancient Settlement in Northumberland

This Romano-British settlement is on the west bank of Tarset Burn, on the well-marked Forestry Commission Tarset Bastle Trail, with Black Middens Bastle nearby. There is a very pleasant walk from the road from Black Middens across a lush water meadow, over a footbridge over Tarset Burn, and a short walk alongside a burn to the settlement. It is well marked until shortly before arriving at the actual site, then we stumbled upon the information board.

The site is recorded as having been excavated by Prof. George Jobey in 1970, being 34 metres by 33 metres, with its entrance at the eastern end. Jobey describes the site as having 3 stone hut circles at the rear of the site, with earth and stone banks and a sunken yard. When Jobey excavated, 2 further circles were found outside the earthworks, but have apparently been destroyed by forestry works.

At the time of our visit, there was heavy bracken, but the humps and bumps of two hut circles are visible, as is the sunken yard and entrance.

This is a pretty and peaceful spot, well away from traffic noise. At the time of our visit, some of the footpaths were closed due to wind blown trees blocking the route.

Sidwood Iron Age Settlement
Sidwood Iron Age Settlement submitted by Anne T : The walk up to Sidwood Iron Age Settlement is along a pleasant forest footpath, alongside a fern covered burn in a sometimes steep gulley. I don't relish steep drops and exposed footpaths, and loved this walk. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Sidwood Iron Age Settlement
Sidwood Iron Age Settlement submitted by Anne T : The foundations of the first roundhouse are the most visible within the grass, and it's possible to walk round the foundations to identify the entrance to the roundhouse (facing away from the entrance to the site in the east).
