Holy Well or Sacred Spring in Dumfries and Galloway

This well, whilst not classified as a holy well, is recorded as Canmore Site ID 66819 'Beckton'. The well is associated with a chapel, site located at NY 1296 8244; an entry from the Canmore record, dated 1793, reads: "Beckton Chapel, where traces of graves were still to be seen in 1793, is said to have belonged to the Knights Templar". A further entry, dated 1890, adds: "A copious spring was once frequented as a consecrated well".

More recently, a site visit in 1966 tells us: "There are no visible remains of the chapel. The well, at NY 1294 8243, situated at the end of a drainage ditch, is visible as a pool of water surrounded by numerous loose stones, suggesting that it may have at one time been stone lined. The name Chapel Well is still in use".

Today, the well sits to the western side of the very busy A74(M). Google Earth images indicate a depression which may, or may not be, the well pool.

If anyone has visited this site, and has photographs or further information about it, please would you add them to this site page? It would be interesting to hear if the water from the well had any special healing and/or restorative properties. Thank you.

Re: Chapel Well (Beckton) by Anonymous on Saturday, 13 May 2023
Another reference to the Chapel Well is contained in the 1824 publication: CALEDONIA OR AN ACCOUNT HISTORICAL AND TOPOGRAPHIC OF NORTH BRITAIN FROM THE MOST ANCIENT TO THE PRESENT TIMES Chalmers Vol III
.........Besides the chapel of Little Hutton, there were two other chapels, in this parish ; one at Becktoun, and the other at Quaas : (k) The vestiges of this chapel may still be seen ; and its font serves, for the market cross, at Locherbie. The chapel at Becktoun belonged of old to the Knights Templars: (l) The traces of the graves, in its appropriate burying-ground, are still manifest ; and there is here also, a copious spring, which was once frequented, as a consecrated well. .........
(l) The Templars had some lands adjacent to this chapel, which were called the chapel lands; they had also other lands, in the parish of Dryfesdale.

A paper published in the DUMFRIESSHIRE AND GALLOWAY Natural History and Antiquarian Society 1905-1906 edition, called "Lockerbie in its origin" gives the following information on this well:

............."The Church of Dryfesdale was dedicated to St. Cuthbert. The Inquisitis of Earl David in 1116 found that the lands of Dryfesdale belonged to the Episcopate of Glasgow. The Church of Dryfesdale was confirmed to this see by successive bulls of Pope Alexander in 1170 and 1178, Pope Lucias in 1181. and Pope Urban in 1186. The last specifies that the chapel of Hutton belonged to the mother church of Dryfesdale. There were also numerous chapels belonging to the Knights Templars in the district. One, for instance, stood near what is yet known as the Chapel Well at Beckton, within a mile from the peel. The font of this chapel was, after the suppression of the Order, used as part of the market cross of the town."
