Holy Well or Sacred Spring in East Lothian

Ancient well associated with a local saint.

According to Walker - "About half-a-mile south-west of Tantallon Castle there is a plentiful spring of water of peculiar excellence, substantially and tastefully enclosed, called Baldred's Well, which immemorially has supplied the inhabitants of Castleton and even Auldhame. It is held in high modern estimation for its qualifications to make tea."

The well is apparently in good condition , although capped. It can be seen from the car park where the road turns off to Tantallon Castle, but reaching it is trickier. The field often has crops in it, and there is no obvious access.

There is another well by St. Baldred's Cave, but this is 19th century.

Canmore site no. 56686.

The first of the two maps above is especially helpful. Thank you! I would love to print it out to hang on my wall, so I can internalize the lay of the land, is there a way to do that? I went to their site (ordnancesurveyleisure.co.uk) and couldn't find it. in appreciation for finding it! - gabrielle

Needless to say, immediately after sending in the site description, I found an article on the various sites dedicated to St. Baldred, which also gives the source of Walker's account:
Besides the well alluded to above, there is one, dedicated to St Baldred, about half a mile to the south-west of Tantallon Castle. From the New Statistical Account of Scotland we learn that "it is held in high modern estimation for its qualifications to make tea," a beverage which, we need hardly remark, did not cheer the anchorite of the Bass.
Mackinlay, J M 1893 "Some notes on St. Baldred's County", Proceedings of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland 28 (1893-94), 78-83. The link is to a PDF of the paper, which might require hitting an "I Agree" button to view.
