The gratings are for sewer pipes running under the field. The spring is piped separate from a catchment, to then run under the road.
I believe the ‘well’ was originally a sump against the wall, for people to fill buckets.

I own the land and believe that the spring/well was used in the middle-ages as a major water source for the town. The nearby "Jooker's Johnnie" walkway down from the high street was apparently the route for the townspeople. It is still a right of way and maintained.

The spring still runs pure and goes back underground under St Patrick's Road, emerging in the grounds of St Patrick's House across the road, feeding water features before running into the Clyde river.

I don't believe there to be any direct relevance to St Patrick of Irelend and West Scotland fame. However, the grounds would also have been farmlands in the Middle Ages for the nearby Greyfriars monastery.
