A Roman fort once stood at Bearsden. It was one of 16 forts along the Antonine Wall - the most complex frontier ever built by the Roman Army. (Began in 140 AD and abandoned by 160 AD.) The fort is now covered by roads and houses but the well-preserved bath-house remains. It was found in the 1970s by the men working on the housing development.
The carved head of a goddess, probably Fortuna, was found here during excavations in 1973. It is now in the Hunterian Museum, Glasgow which has displays on the Antonine Wall.
