Rock Art in South Ayrshire

Recorded as Canmore ID 42713 this Coilsfield cup and ring stone was found on the underside of a grave-slab in a site also known as King Coil's Grave Stone or Old King Cole's Stone. It "contain(ed) a food vessel filled with burnt bones (and) was found when digging a gravel pit at Coilsfield. The cover-stone, which measured about 5ft by 2 1/2ft was sculptured with cup and ring marks, spirals etc."

Further information, including 1851 & 1866 sketches of the prehistoric carving, can be found on The Northern Antiquarian (TNA) - see their page for Coilsfield, Tarbolton, Ayrshire. TNA include a brief archaeology and history and some interesting folklore.

Note: the 1866 sketch shows a funerary urn which is remarkably similar to that shown for the Tarbolton Cist. Whilst recorded as two separate sites on Canmore (41713 and 42714), is it possible these two sites are related?

Note: This stone is recorded by Canmore as being lost - do you have any information which might help locate its current whereabouts?
