Blackgate of Pitscandlie submitted by hamish

Two massive stones go pretty well unnoticed by the folk who live here.

After visiting Aberlemno carry on down the road towards Forfar, there is a turning on the right about three quarters of a mile after Pitscandlie House. There is just enough room to park on the edge of the lane. Walk up the lane for about 150yds and in the yard of the second house is the remains of this Circle.

Cosmic writes: Pitscandlie is at NO484528 in the grounds of a private house. There are only two standing stones remaining of this circle with a further two fallen but recognisable. The owner informed me that a fifth stone "vanished" during some alterations in the last ten years - only after that was it given protection by Historic Scotland! The bigger stone is massive - some ten feet tall and correspondingly broad.

Note: Some nice pictures in of these stones from Hamish - a previously unreported site here on the portal.

There appear to be cupmarks on the back of the Stone, A bit difficult to photograph with the bunker just there.

This is the larger of the Stones, and I mean large. The lady of the house was telling me that there was another one but it was removed to make the drive. She doesn't know what happened to it. It was before her time.

It always amazes me how narrow some of these Stones are. This one has a metal ring embedded in it.
