Ancient Cross in Argyll

This is the one of two medieval nunneries recorded in Scotland. Six medieval crosses/cross slabs have been recorded within the building, three of which have been lost and two of which are now in the Abbey Museum. For more information see Canmore ID 204569.

The one stone is described as a'remaining portion of slab' which was last recorded in 1998 as being in a row of stones east of the church, bearing a simple Latin cross. The slab measures 1.28m by 0.48m.

The Journal of Antiquities also includes a page for St Mary’s Nunnery, Island Of Iona, Argyll And Bute, Scotland, which includes a photograph of the ruins of this nunnery, together with a plan, background information and a list of reference sources for more information.
