Museum in Easter Ross. Tarbat Discovery Centre is a Museum situated in an old church in the beautiful coastal village of Portmahomack, 42 miles North East of Inverness. Having been abandoned in 1946 the dilapidated building was saved from ruin in 1980, when it was purchased by the newly formed Tarbat Old Parish Church Preservation Trust.

From an aerial photograph taken in 1984 a curious ‘semi-circular crop mark’ was spotted in a field south west of the church. A small excavation of the ditch, carried out in 1991, produced material of a date, which presented the possibility of an earlier Pictish settlement on the site. At the same time, whilst clearing the inside of the church, some small fragments of Pictish sculpture were uncovered.

Pictish dig finds on display for the first time at the Tarbat Discovery Centre by Andy B on Tuesday, 22 April 2014
(User Info | Send a Message)
Never before seen Pictish artefacts are now on display for the first time as part of an exhibition highlighting the fascinating finds made by University of Aberdeen archaeologists.

The items, which include intricate metal work, pins and pendants, can be seen at the Tarbat Discovery Centre until the end of September.

The majority of the finds come from successful digs in Rhynie, Aberdeenshire, which last year uncovered what are thought to be the first Royal Pictish remains in the North East of Scotland.

"The sites at Rhynie, Tarbat and the Fortriu site in the Moray Firth area have revealed some stunning discoveries and shed more light on the Pictish Kingdoms and where their main power bases were situated,"explained Dr Gordon Noble from the University of Aberdeen.

"This exhibition is an opportunity to share these exciting finds with the wider public and to see first-hand some of these beautiful artefacts, some of which are more than a thousand years old, and shed new light on the origins of the Pictish kingdoms."

"One of the highlights is a small iron axe-shaped pendent which is similar to what the Rhynie Man a stone carving depicting a Pictish man - is carrying and Scotland's only known metalworking tongs, symbols of power and authority in the Pictish period"

The discoveries at Rhynie, including metalwork, pottery imported from the Mediterranean and sherds of glass from France have reinforced the belief that the Rhynie area was a high-status site during the 5th-6th centuries.

Also on display are finds from excavations on the peninsula that are ongoing - these have targeted a series of monumental roundhouses dating from the Iron Age.

The displays will be updated during the year as new digs begin around the region. The current project is an excavation at Tarlogie Dun, opposite the Glenmorangie distillery. The project is a partnership between the University of Aberdeen, the Tarbat Discovery Centre, National Museums Scotland and Glenmorangie.

Tony Watson, Chairman of The Discovery Centre, said: "We are really pleased to host the launch of this important exhibition from the University of Aberdeen. Dr Noble and his team are undertaking a massive research programme which continues to amaze as it reveals the complex structure of this mysterious people and their culture."

"Here at the site of our Pictish monastery in Portmahomack, we are starting to understand that this did not happen here by chance but was the result of an already established and sophisticated society."

"As our partners in this ground-breaking project at the University continue with their various investigations in our immediate area, we look forward to even more secrets from this mysterious past being revealed."
