Holy Well or Sacred Spring in Highlands

St Mary’s Well is a natural spring to be found on the uphill side of the middle path on the Sutor cliffs. Tradition says that it marks the spot where a Trinitarian Friary was founded in 1271. The existence of the friary seems doubtful and the slope would have made building difficult to say the least.

Heading away from town, follow the estate wall around Cromarty House until the road turns sharply right. Here, to your left, is access to a coast path which, at the far end of a beach, starts to climb steeply. About 20 minutes climb brings you to the well but it is unmarked and easily missed. If time allows continue on to the Lookout and return to Cromarty via the road for a delightful circular route.
