Snizort Stone Setting
Snizort Stone Setting submitted by hamilton : Cuidrach Stone Setting and the nearby powerline post, looking approximately north. (Vote or comment on this photo)
As long ago as 1989, Discovery and Excavation in Scotland noted the discovery of a stone circle in Snizort Parish on the Isle of Skye. Unfortunately, an incorrect OS reference was assigned to the site, an error that has been consistently repeated until recently.

In early 2015, Canmore updated their website, and also provided a new, accurate 8-digit OS reference for what they term the Cuidrach Stone Setting, at NG38755962, which ties down the location to a 10-metre square. The description often associated with this setting, Snizert Stone Circle is misspelled (should be Snizort) and vague. Snizort Parish is a big place. The setting is now named from Cuidrach Estate, on which it stands.

The original article contained other errors: the site was said to be ‘one third of a mile’ south of the Cuidrach road, but is in fact a mere 130 metres from it, and the telegraph pole quoted as a guide is actually a power-line post.

Once you know where to look, Cuidrach Stone Setting is easily found: it is in fact clearly visible from the roadside. From the A856 from Portree to Uig, follow the Cuidrach road from NG390597 for 150 metres and park in a large lay-by/passing place. You will see a power line (on wooden posts) crossing the road a few metres ahead. Look left. One powerline post stands close by, but let your gaze move on to the second post (to the southwest). Just left of it you will see the stones, just 130 metres distant over what can often be rather boggy ground (so stout footwear is recommended).

Five stones standing on the arc of a circle are immediately obvious, and a sixth can be seen from close quarters, prostrate, barely peeking out from the boggy ground within the circle.

It is probable that this monument is the remains of a stone circle, since the original report stated that probing had identified buried stones in the gaps.

Circle diameter: 11 by 10 feet

Tried to find this site in 2004, looked and looked, but nothing remotely resembling a stone circle, or standing stones, was visible.

There are some old sheilings (summer houses) and the remains of a wall but I couldn't find the circle.

It is not matked on any OS map.

I live a mile from this site.

Kammer writes: The following text is an excerpt from the 1989 edition of Discovery and Excavation in Scotland (page 44) describing the Snizert Stone Circle:
[Note the location and name is wrong, see above for corrected details]

Snizert Parish
NG386596 Stone Circle

Situated a third of a mile south of the Cuiderach road, and 20m SE of a telegraph pole at a height of c40m. Below a small knoll and in boggy ground is a circular setting of 4 upright and two recumbent stones. It measures 3.4m NE to SW and c3.2m NW to SE, with stones standing to a maximum height of 1.1m. Where no surface stones appear to indicate breaks in the circle, probing has located stones now buried at these points.
