Monastery in Burma (Myanmar)

Mt Popa Monastery is located on a volcanic plug on the side of Mt Popa Volcano some two hours drive east from Bagan. Its origins are lost in the mythology of the area and is home to the Nats (gods) of traditional Burmese religion and consequently is a pilgrimage site for locals. The monastery is reached after a barefooted climb of the 777 steps up the vertiginous side of the volcanic plug. The view from the top is wonderful, although do not carry food with you on the ascent as the local monkeys will mug you for it!!
