A city and its surrounding kingdom on the Silk Road in western China, on the north-east edge of the Lop Nor Desert. Known in Chinese records from 200 BC, and "discovered" in modern times by Svan Hedin.

The most famous finds are the Tarim mummies, burials from 3800 years ago. Chinese expeditions in 1979-1980 discovered a canal, Buddhist Stupas, houses, wooden and bronze artifacts, jewelry, coins, pottery and mesolithic stone tools.

Clay towers have been used in historic times as watch towers and signal beacons, though their original purpose may have have been different.
