The Jokhang Temple is located in the Tibetan Quarter of Lhasa. The oldest parts were built in 652 AD by Songsten Gampo, although it has been renovated several times since then. During the Cultural Revolution in 1966 the Red Guards attacked it and for ten years thereafter there was no worship permitted at the temple. It is now once again a pilgrimage place for Tibetans. Outside the main gate there is a stela dated to 821 AD with an inscription recording a treaty between China and Tibet. Tibet has many temples but most of the other ones I visited in December 2019 were too recent to include in the Megalithic Portal, although well worth a visit if you can obtain a Tibet Travel Permit!!
