Barrow Cemetery in Sør-Trøndelag

The Rein barrow cemetery has previously consisted of no less than 78 burial monuments. The number was mentioned in written sources in 1774 and they were oriented in a long line along the coastline, some were large monumental round barrows. Most of these once impressive barrows have been lost over the years mainly due to plowing of the nearby fields. At the Rein farm it was recorded eight round barrows and one standing stone. Only two barrows and the standing stone remains of this once impressive cemetery.

The two barrows and menhir is located inside a grain field and when I visited it was close to harvesting and I could not get close for any close up photos and had to take photos from the nearby road. Next to the road is also a information poster. The barrows are covered only with grass and sticks out like small "islands" in the grain field.

The largest barrow to the east is 25 metres in diameter and 5,5 metres in height. It has a beautiful rounded shape. The second one to the west is 20 metres in diameter and around 2,75 metres in height. Next to this barrow and on the top are two pieces of a broken standing stone, The two pieces are around 80cm long and 40cm wide.

The standing stone is between the two round barrows. The stone is 4,5 metres in height, around 80cm wide and 30-40cm thick. It was previously described as 5 metres in height but was taken down and later restored and put back at its original placement. It has a straight top and probably the top has broken off and it was originally higher.
