This is a runestone from later iron age, it has been dated to the end of the viking age, around 1000AD. The stone is about 3 metres in height, and about 20-30cm wide, it is almost cylindrical.
The runes are made in the later futhark that was in use from around 700-1200AD. The inscription means: "Roar erected this stone after Olve, his father."
The runestone is in sparagmit, it has been put together to its original size, the top part was found in a small ditch right next to the local church in 1879. The stone has been standing in many places around the church, and at some time it was placed in a park in the town of Lillehammer. In 1928 it was removed again back to its original place right next to the cemetery.
An old tale tells of a troll in a mountain nearby threw the stone to hit the church, but it missed. When the runestone was found in 1775, it was three standing stones here, but some years after, only this one remained.
Who Olve and Roar was, we dont know. Roar was a common name in this part of Norway. But maybe the farm Aulestad has its name from one of these caracters?
